Before Swimming in the Ocean, Don't Forget These Tips:

While the Gulf Beaches have lifeguards on mobile patrol every day of the week, it’s everyone’s responsibility to be mindful when venturing out into the blue. Here are a few tips to get your group up to speed on Coastal Bend water safety.

Check Conditions

Check wanted conditions before going in by looking at the local beach forecast and talking to the lifeguard at the beach. For more information on beach conditions and forecasts, visit noaa.gov.

Lifeguards

Whenever possible, swim at the beach with a lifeguard present. Check out the Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department’s full lifeguard schedule for more details on sites with lifeguard coverage and mobile patrol throughout the year.

Know the Flags

Check the flags displayed at the beach before entering the water. The flags are a warning system for surf and current conditions.

Don't Assume

Great weather for the beach does not always mean it's safe to swim in the shallows. Rip currents can form on calm, sunny days. For more information on rip current dangers, visit jesanismithfoundation.org

Prepare Your Group

Discuss safety plans and special needs with each member of your group. Download a copy of the beach safety coloring book or pick up a copy at the Visitor Info Center.
