Enhancing the Event Experience in the Gulf Coast Capital
Casey Ortiz’s Journey from Bartender to General Manager at Local Hotspot, Bar Under the Sun
Bar Under the Sun (BUS) isn't just a cocktail garden and kitchen—it's a thriving community hub under the visionary leadership of General Manager Casey Ortiz. Since assuming her role in December 2020, Casey has redefined BUS as more than just a venue, but as a dynamic space where local vibrancy and creativity converge.
Casey's journey at BUS began as a bartender when the venue first opened its doors. Her ascent to General Manager in 2020 coincided with a significant expansion in BUS's event offerings.
"When I took on the GM role," Casey recalls, "I noticed a surge in inquiries from people wanting to host events. That's when I realized we needed a more structured approach."
Under her guidance, BUS launched a dedicated booking platform, streamlining the event planning process and accommodating the growing demand.
At its core, BUS is a family and pet-friendly establishment where everyone is welcome to enjoy a diverse array of events and activities. Its collaborative approach to community engagement also makes it the perfect place for hosting events in a charming downtown location.
Housed in the former Greyhound Bus Station, BUS offers a unique ambiance that blends historical charm with contemporary flair. The breezeway space, spanning 56 x158 feet, features a stage, a private bar, and adaptable furniture arrangements that cater to events ranging from small, intimate events to large scale events.
"People love it because it’s outdoors and very convertible," says Casey. “Our breezeway space holds 300 people, so it can be used for a variety of events.”
BUS has hosted events like baby and wedding showers, weddings, receptions, company Christmas parties, birthday parties, and many more. There have even been non-profit fundraisers for the Purple Door, Jazz nights, DJ brunches, and ‘Cigars on the Bayfront,’ an event raising money for the Gulf Coast Humane Society.
Casey's role extends beyond managing operations; she takes a hands-on approach to event coordination, ensuring each gathering is meticulously planned and executed. From initial inquiries to event day logistics, Casey guides clients through every step of the process, facilitating venue tours, coordinating catering, and liaising with external vendors to ensure seamless execution.
"We've seen an increase in demand year over year," Casey observes. “And with the addition of our kitchen for catering, we’re able to offer even more to our clients.”
Reflecting on her time at BUS, Casey holds a special affinity for events like the "Shop Small Crawl," which celebrates local businesses and fosters community spirit—a sentiment shared by BUS patrons and organizers alike. She envisions continued growth and innovation at BUS, driven by community feedback and evolving trends in event planning. With a growing roster of repeat clients and early bookings, BUS is poised to solidify its status as a premier event venue in Corpus Christi.
Casey’s dedication to exceptional event planning exemplifies a commitment to fostering community connections and delivering outstanding event experiences.
